Why does it matter?  Because every putter has a lofted face angle to get the ball up and rolling on the green when you stroke it. The issue? If your putter's sole is not perfectly parallel to the ground it creates a compound angle where putter face meets the ball during stroke.  That angle influences your ball to go right (push) if the heel of the putter is even slightly up and to the left (pull) if the toe of the putter is even slightly up.  The greater the distance to the cup, the greater the push or pull.
